Google should really fix this so that you get a message that explains why. And even going to Settings -> Make default didn't do anything. So when I opened it it told me it wasn't the default browser, and offered to set it as such, but it didn't work. The reason is that I had installed Chrome as a normal user, not as an administrator. We strongly encourage users to use the latest version of the browser as they include important security updates and features that keep you safe while browsing online.I've just faced the same problem. While old/outdated versions of the browser will still work, they will not receive any further updates.

Was thinking the same thing, being all of Opera's updates/upgrades depend on new builds of Google Chrome.
